Having complained a bit about AI, I feel like I should mention I do actually use AI.
Clearly AI is already quite powerful, and continues to improve. Ask the robot a question, debug some code, even write some code, and you get a fast answer, sometimes even correct, including in domains that for humans would be slow and require knowing or finding a lot of information.
But AI is useful - to what use? AI is effective - to what effect? Even if AI doesn't shorten your attention span or ensloppify your project, the question is if it makes not just more software faster but the world better.
I'd like to think I'm not pooping out too much slop but of course maybe everybody thinks "AI is bad for everybody else, but I can avoid the dangers". Definitely 1) never have AI write prose and 2) note honestly whenever AI writes code. As a positive goal, though, improving life for actual human users in the real world would be a good measure.
